Authentication Indicators are returned as part of the 3-D Secure (3DS) process, such as Mastercard SecureCode or Verified by Visa.
These indicators reflect whether a cardholder was successfully authenticated during checkout — and whether the merchant is protected against chargebacks.
The table below explains the meaning of each indicator value:
| Code | Description | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| N | Not Authenticated | Authentication was attempted but not successful. The merchant does not receive chargeback protection for this transaction. |
| A | Authenticated | Authentication was attempted and successful. The merchant does receive chargeback protection. |
| X | Not Applicable | Authentication was not enabled on the PayGate account, or an unexpected error occurred during the authentication process. No chargeback protection is provided. |
To benefit from chargeback protection, merchants must ensure that 3-D Secure is enabled and properly configured on their account. This can be accessed through the Merchant Access Portal.
